Everyday Paleo Interview with Sarah Fragoso

In my premiere launch of the Being Primal Interview Series, I had a major FAIL.
The software I was using crapped out, so I had to resort to plan B: A podcast.
While I was initially disappointed with this (I may have dropped a few f-bombs during the 4 hours I feverishly worked at trying to get the video software to work) I eventually accepted that my initial foray into all this would end up being a podcast.
The upshot is I had a Paleo rock star to kick off my initial launch; Sarah Fragoso, author of the book Everyday Paleo, along with a website and podcast of the same name (The podcast is co-hosted with Dain and Chrissy Gower of Growing Up Paleo).
Sarah Fragoso Profile...
Website: Everyday Paleo
Facebook: www.facebook.com/everydaypaleo
Twitter: @everydaypaleo
Book: Everyday Paleo
She would bristle at the "rock star" label I just gave her, but in fairness to her, she has been able to dominate the Paleo space while remaining down to earth and extremely approachable (this can be the only possible reason to explain why she agreed to talk with me).
Everyday Paleo highlights to look forward to...
I must admit the interview was great fun. I laughed my a$$ off at times as I attempted to really dig into Sarah's story and capture the essence of the space she now occupies, without coming off as the biggest idiot on the internet (unfortunately, I failed miserably on my second quest).
Here are a few other things to listen for.
- How I completely screwed up her last name
- How I almost made both of us cry
- Her light bulb moment where she realized something HAD to change
- Breaking news on a Sarah Fragoso secret that not even TMZ knows about (you got it here first kids at Being Primal)
- Why she turned down her first book publishing deal (yes she turned it down!)
- Her chance meeting with Robb Wolf and how that changed her whole life
- The evolution of how she launched her new career
- How I am the ONLY one who has noticed something in her book that no one else on the planet has noticed
- Find out the homework I gave her...which I might add she still hasn't completed!!
How to listen to this podcast...
This part is important. Don't just listen and be inspired by her story. To create change in your own life you need to take this whole process several steps further.
First, listen to this more than once. The newness of the interview will prevent you from really capturing and internalizing some of the brilliant insight Sarah had to offer. (Note: I had none to offer sadly. Damn it!)
Second, when you listen to it a second time, have a pen and paper handy and listen for themes. Here are a few things to help guide your thinking, but there are many others depending on where you are at in your own life.
- see how her story connects with your story
- steal ideas that she used to help propel herself forward in the journey (ie. Who did she turn to when she needed help?)
- make note of how writing played (continues to play) a crucial part in her evolution
- witness how the role of family plays itself out in most of what she does
Most importantly, realize that the Sarah of 2007 (the year she adopted the Everyday Paleo lifestyle) might be the you of today. See yourself in her story. The point of all this is not to simply be inspired by what she has accomplished, but rather see a part of you in her story.
When you do that, change becomes possible simply because she has done it.
There is nothing magical about her journey. She would be the first to tell you she possesses no magical powers. She simply had enough of feeling crappy about where she was in her life and took some calculated measures to change her life.
Success leaves clues (I think I might subconsciously be ripping off Tony Robbins...oh well too bad!).
Uncover those clues in Sarah's story.

Wow!!! I dont believe I’m the first to post.
What a great interview on both your parts. I’ve browsed her site before but actually started taking a deeper dive and it is loaded with good info and additional links.
Will definitely give it another listen. This time not while I’m working.
This is good stuff Dean. Thanks.
Steve
Steve-o-rama. First my man. That has to count for something somewhere doesn’t it? Yeah there is a lot to learn from Sarah’s story. Sadly, that Jackass she was talking to just wouldn’t shut his trap. Oh btw you should check out here book as well. I’m not impressed easily (actually not true…anything shiny impresses me) but she did a great job with this book…
Really enjoyed the interview. Certainly worth a listen.
Thanks Dean.
It probably helped in this one I was actually talking to myself cause I’m sure it would have been as effective…glad sarah was willing to fill that space otherwise this could have been very awkward. Besides everything I said
what did you find most interesting about Saroso’s (that’s my nickname for her…it’s Sar +oso…clever eh?????) talk?
Dean, great job on the interview! I really like your natural, casual and humorous style. keep it up.
I left my website there as a bookmarker. I’m 60 days into my new found self, and like you, I’ve been living with “normal” or should I say, TOO COMMON bloating and gas for the last 20 years!!!! I think for most of America (75% who are intolerant of wheat/grains) we start feeling and seeing the affects in our later 20′s….can’t rely on the ‘ole metabolism too keep you looking good, right? So, that’s how I lived too “eating right” carbs, veggies, and little meats. At times, none. All the while still maintaining an active lifestyle (still playing soccer at 43).
Now, working out less, eating better (Paleo), and noticing the results after just 60+ days. Amazing, eh? I’m thinking by the Holidays I’m going to be one bad ass!
My wife has noticed my “moods” are gone! We don’t pick fights during her time of the month. Amazing. Kids (8 and 5 1/2) are slowly getting converted. Not too difficult so far. Similar to Sarah situation.
Keep it Caveman! Take care Dean,
Craig Almaguer
craig@beica.net
520-228-1895 (I also live in Chico, CA…but don’t know Sarah)
PS. I just blogged my first blog on my “old site” – Beica. I’m wondering if I should just turn the damn thing into a Paleo focused site? It’s been dormant for almost 3 years (economy).
hey Craig,
Thanks for your comment brotha! Lets start from the bottom and work our way up. This Paleo site came about because I managed to solve my own problem and I thought I could enter this space and help people…of course lots of people are trying to do this as well, so my suggestion is to definitely blog about it…but find an angle that makes you unique…as you can see I am dominating the niche of PALEO JACKASS!
And yeah your story does sound very similar to mine…and some of Sarah’s but i suspect you personally did not birth your kids :-0
And thanks about the comments with my casual style…that was my goal…and will be my angel moving forward….and more importantly it helps deflect from the fact I’m not so bright eh! he he ! But I proudly stand behind most unprofessional interview on the internet…hopefully future interviewees won’t be as difficult as Sarah however. It was tough to get her to talk or to laugh. What up with that Fragoso? ha ha!
Dean, I thought the interview was great! I felt there was a very relaxed feel to it. The interview seemed to flow nicely and the questions were great. I have been following Sarah’s blog and podcasts for a while. You really get a sense of who she is in your interview. Great work! Looking forward to all of your future help and advice.
Thanks Hector. I take full credit for breaking her out of her shell. She was shy and meek before that interview…I predict great things for her in the future! Oh wait…great things have happened to her. Well I am glad you got what i wanted people to get…a real sense of Sarah Fragoso the person…not the paleo rock star. She really is a regular gal who is simply committed to helping changing lives on this great planet of ours. It certainly didn’t hurt my cause that she loves to laugh.
Hey Dean!
That was freakin awesome! as I expected it to be! It was funny, moving, motivating and down to earth. You both have a great gift for teaching, inspiring and making people comfortable…it helps that you both have a great sense of humour! (But of course Dean…you are the funnier one!) Do I get brownie points??
I really enjoyed listening to that…great things are still to come from you both.
Thank You!
Sarah is pretty dang down to earth isn’t she. You are right I am the funnier one, but I think that was only because SF was holding back…I’m aim to have her on again once I switch from a PC to a Mac (next week woo hoo) so I can have her on video. And second time around I am sure she will be ready to kick my ass funny ass. (Oh she doesn’t know yet I am having her on a second time
Hey Dean,
Podcast downloaded and I’m looking forward to listening to this on the commute home tonight (I’m in New Zealand). Also, awaiting delivery of Sarah’s book a I type
(just between you and me, it wasn’t just Sarah’s name you messed up, “Rob Wolfe”
)
WHAT! I don’t see anything wrong there (you see what I did? going back in and changing it so the evidence has disappeared making it look like you are simply beating a dead horse while he (me) is down….he he!)
And WHAT #2..you are in New Zealand. How is it possible you are getting this podcast I have posted in Toronto…someone help me…I don’t understand…
I think you will really enjoy Sarah…and her book…which is more like a piece of art…I have hung mine in a picture frame up on my wall…surrounded by a guard….cat (who is currently slacking because he is sleeping underneath it)
Let me know what you think..or let sarah now know how fantastic you thought I was err I mean she was.
ha ha ha you’re a funny fella
The magic of the interwebs, Dean. It’s a magic little black box that’s kept hidden away under lock and key, so nobody can steal it. Or we’d all lose the world wide webs!
I’m thinking I might actually take a lunch break today and listen to it then instead of leaving it for tonight..
I actually bought the book as a present for a friend, depending on when it arrives I may read it first, otherwise I’ll have to wait until she’s finished and borrow it
Great addition to your already inspirational blog. Interestingly enough I had some of the same experiences Sarah had once she went Paleo. The first thing I noticed after just two weeks was that my legs and feet were no longer swollen after work. I work on my feet for 10-12 hours a day running around on concrete floors and my feet and legs were always swollen at the end of the day before Paleo. The bloat thing, so on. It feels so good to feel satiated at the end of a meal without that ugg, sick feeling, even when trying to eat ” healthy foods”. Even though those cravings pop up once in a while, they become less and less frequent the longer I live this lifestyle. Thanks so much for your personal blog and for inviting Sarah to join all of your faithful followers. Rock on Dean.
yeah I’m glad she shared the detail she did (of course I credit that to my amazing frickin’ questions…when I was of course mispronouncing her name or cutting the poor woman off) because it helps put this whole thing in perspective for people.
And yeah the cravings thing is always around…just less so and more of a whisper than that loud screaming in our head.
Glad you enjoyed Senora Fragoso’s insight as much as I did.
That was an amazing inspiring interview. Sarah is a super bright lady and I’m looking forward to reading her book.
I love how she interprets her remark that she eats whatever she wants. Namely, since turning paleo, she has learned to want to eat foods which are good for her.
I completely identify with that. I am now craving foods I would never have touched in my pre-paleo days such as ground meat, fatty fish, nuts, and coconut oil. And I wouldn’t want to go back. They are my staples. No, in fact, they are almost like “treats” to me as in my pre-paleo days I would never have allowed myself to have these foods.
Unlike Sarah, I wasn’t able to go paleo “cold turkey”. I gave up grains, rice, pasta and bread as of several months ago. And it took me some more time (just within these last couple of weeks) to decide that dairy is out of my diet for good. Cravings are still a struggle but I’m confident, (as Sarah had mentioned), that as time passes they will become fainter.
Jana banana, great insights there. Yes Sarah is one bright lady…I take complete credit for that of course because by coming off as a big dummy, I made her look even smarter…you’re welcome Sarah
And that was a great lesson she revealed as well. It was very interesting to listen to how she spoke about things.
For instance I’m not sure how many picked up on the subtle little comment she made about calling something a treat as opposed a cheat.
HUGE psychological difference between those two words…and can have a big impact on how we view it and how we see ourselves.
I also liked how she talked about her decisions being her decisions…really goes a long way to take the guilt out of many of the things we do.
thanks for sharing gurl.
Such a super interview, Dean. It’s so funny, I hear so many people say that they don’t like calling it Paleo or Primal. I know that the word “diet” creeps us all out.
I struggle with this too. “Oh, I’ve gone Primal” or “I’m eating Paleo” and when I tell people what that means I find myself always tempering it with “well, for now” so that people don’t think I’ve gone completely out into left field. But really, it’s not just for now. It’s for good.
I should be used to this because I got the eye rolling for the whole 22 years I was a vegetarian.
I love Sarah Fragoso now – thank you.
Kill the scale!!!
Melissa very interesting comment. It’s weird I did the same thing as well. For the first 6 months I talked about “CARB CONTROL.” I never used the word Paleo.
You don’t see the work much on my site either. In fact when I first launched the site, I called it, “Outsmart your bodyfat.”
But I will tell you one of the shifts (my new word btw) that I have made just recently.
There is a wonderful community out there connected with the Paleo lifestyle and I enjoy being a part of it…so much so in fact I want to add to it and help become a major influencer to help others at least experience it so they have something to compare it to.
You will notice later today that my tagline will be changing as well…the word Paleo will now appear, as it will in my Book I am going to release on my site.
And hey a vegetarian for 22 years…damn you beat me by 3.
Yea, so I’m 3 years sicker than you were. HaHa.
Make ShiFt happen!!! So clever.
I can’t wait for your book. Yipee.
Awesome interview! I love your enthusiasm! I also really love your site. I just found it and will definitely be back! Paleo is such a game-changer. I love that it is so much more than a “diet.”
I am so excited to hear that the AHS info is going to be available online!
Hey Sally. Thanks. Clearly my enthusiasm was like a million times better than Sarah’s. I think it’s the only part of the interview where I was better…I came a distant second in any other category that mattered.
And I think you right with the whole diet thing. It’s a lifestyle…that includes a healthy way of eating.
Oh and for those interested, in the interview Sarah mentioned that the Ancestral Health Symposium stuff would be available online. There are currently 14 videos up on the site. You can see those here…
http://ancestryfoundation.org/
DEAN!! You are the man! I am so excited by all your posts
I’m listening to this with my Mike sitting here…. How you got Sarah Fragoso to interview is just CRAZY COOL! I really have to listen twice….
How I got Sarah to interview…that’s easy…I lured her in with my good looks, immense charm, my monstrous intellect and tremendous wit…either that or it may have had something to do with the pleading begging and actual crying I did in my email
Awesome interview! I’ve been following Sarah’s site and eating Paleo 2 months. I’m down 12 pounds, 3 inches in the waist, and best of all feel wonderful! Sarah’s book and site have kept me motivated. I look forward to checking out your blog now and reading some new stuff.
I listen to Paleo podcasts 2-3 times a week at night in bed. This is honestly first one where I was so intrigued that I didn’t fall asleep. Great questions and you were able to get Sarah to share a lot of detail.
Love the lightbulb moment where she realizes “this is how it feels to be healthy”. For me, that sums it up. I think that is the feeling we all seek, whether we know it or not. I really enjoyed your conversation with Sarah!
yeah that was a good moment. I’m going to do a follow up post…5 things learned with Sarah Fragoso simply because I want to make sure people pick up the really important lessons.
Hi Dean,
Your site is an inspiration, so much so I have decided to start my own paleo diet site based on my experience with a raw paleo diet over the last two years. I must admit it has had it’s challenges but I never been in such good health and shape. My site is http://mypaleodietblog.com – hopefully you can check it out and maybe we could share some tips.
Dee x
Awesome Dee. I did check your site as well. Your email is incorrect however.
I just listened to your interview today and enjoyed it! I think you did a good, relaxed interview. I want to buy her book now. I just found your site and the interest in paleo recently.
